| It’s fitting that Charlie Dixon wears number 23, the same as that worn by St Kilda’s Justin Koschitzke. The similarities are stark. Both are tall, skilful, aggressive forwards capable of kicking plenty of goals, and both wear their hearts on their sleeves. Dixon, whose athleticism and goal sense sees him play full forward or centre half forward with equal aplomb, was raised in Cairns. He showed plenty of promise as junior basketballer before making the switch to football in 2003. His relatively late start mattered little. He quickly established an impressive reputation as a ‘go to man’ for Cairns Saints in the Cairns A Grade competition and followed up with several eye-catching performances at the 2008 Under 18 State Championships. Dixon’s off field work ethic is highly regarded, so too his strong ‘one grab’ hands and - in an impressive twist for a bloke who stands at two metres tall – his fierce competitiveness at ground level. Dixon’s affable personality, maturity and never-say-die presence meant he was a natural fit for leadership. It came no surprise when he was picked as GCFC’s first vice-captain. |
