The Gold Coast SUNS are seeking nominations from NON-AFL athletes from Gold Coast and Northern Rivers aged between 16 and 19 years who want to be the next AFL star! Nominees can earn a spot to test themselves against AFL player standards and find out about the Gold Coast SUNS Talent Academy.

The Gold Coast Combine is designed to identify potential players from all sporting backgrounds who possess natural athletic ability and who enjoy competing at the highest level. Athletes might be great sprinters, long distance runners, basketballers, high jumpers, rugby players, tennis players or just have a competitive nature.

The program name refers to the search for potential players who combine athletic potential with hand and foot skills and have the mental toughness to play AFL . Players need to show they can combine the three elements. There’s no obligation to participate in the program beyond the initial testing day. All athletes are actively encouraged to continue playing their first sport but receive the benefit of access to additional professional coaching.

Run in conjunction with AFL Queensland, a formal testing day will take place on the Gold Coast on Monday 18th October. Nominations to be a part this initiative close on Friday 15th October.

The best 20 athletes tested will also be invited to a special Gold Coast SUNS’ Combine Day in mid-November as part of the Academy selection process.

In addition to further testing, the Combine Day will provide an opportunity for the selected participants to learn from other successful crossover athletes including Gold Coast SUNS' player Karmichael Hunt  who has made the switch to AFL from Rugby League - as well as Charlie Dixon (a star junior basketballer), Jack Hutchins (an elite level swimmer) and Zac Smith (a state-level underage indoor and outdoor soccer player).
