With pre-season training back in full swing on the Gold Coast, players can expect a tough lead-up to the Christmas break, says high performance manager Stephen Schwerdt.

On Monday, the Gold Coasters arrived back to the Club’s training base for the first time since departing for a 16-day high altitude camp in Arizona.

Taken through their paces, the challenging conditioning session was a sign of things to come for the playing list as coaching and high performance staff begin preparations for 2014.

“The next three weeks before Christmas will be pretty solid,” Schwerdt said.

In his twelve months in charge of the Club’s High Performance centre, Schwerdt has overseen significant growth and development through the Club’s training program, challenging the player’s physically and mentally and helping them understand the importance of elite conditioning and recovery.

None more evident than the way they approached their training in Arizona.

“I was really impressed with how hard they trained and their ability to endure through mental toughness.”

‘They have come back wanting to train even harder.”

With the foundations now set, Schwerdt said the training would now shift from athletic performance and move towards football structure and skills work.

“This week now is all about transitioning our program into football, and the last two weeks will be big footy weeks,” he said.

“We have the foundations, now we need to start cranking it up.”
