When Peter Wright lined up 45 metres out for what was the match-winning goal on Saturday afternoon, Metricon Stadium collectively held its breath.
As a young key forward, Wright is still learning his craft but has shown on numerous occasions his ability to focus and find the goals.
With less than two minutes remaining and trailing West Coast, Wright’s calm approach cemented him as the hero of the game once the siren sounded.
Assistant Coach Matthew Primus told media on Monday Wright’s leadership in that moment was a talking point during the match review process.
“We looked at the last three or four minutes when West Coast hit the lead and how we fought back and did a lot of things right,” he said.
“It validates good leadership for Peter Wright, he was terrific in that regard.
“He stood up in a key moment for us and went back and sealed the game.
“He’s still a young player learning his craft, he certainly gets a fair bit of attention onto him.”
The coaching panel were pleased with more than just Wright’s match winning kick, as the 20-year-old was vocal on field in ensuring the SUNS held onto their lead.
“We certainly gave him some good feedback on his leadership,” Primus said.
“He kicked the goal and actually organised what we needed to do behind the ball to save the game.
“Obviously had another shot and was really smart with the decisions he made then.
“We’re certainly happy with his progress.”
