The Gold Coast SUNS have finalised their playing list for 2015, with the club adding five fresh faces to the rookie list as well as delivering on their commitment to re-select Greg Broughton as a rookie.
GC SUNS Recruiting Manager, Dom Ambrogio, was thrilled to secure mature-age talent to the club and says Wednesday morning's rookie draft went according to plan for the SUNS recruiting team.
Gold Coast selected Central Districts midfielder Josh Glenn with pick seven, before adding Coburg utility Adam Saad (pick 25), South Adelaide ruckman Keegan Brooksby (pick 42), Bendigo Gold forward Tyrone Downie (pick 59), Broughton (pick 67) and former Brisbane Lions tagger Andrew Raines (pick 71).
“We basically went with youth at the national draft to get elite youth and then in the rookie draft we’ve gone to sure up various areas of our list and fill in that list demographic,” Ambrogio told goldcoastfc.com.au following Thursday’s rookie draft.
“We’re really happy (with our selections), that was plan A. It filled some needs on our list in terms of getting a mature ruck, we’ve got a rebounding small defender, we’ve got a medium forward and we’ve got a midfielder that we think can play all zones of the ground in Josh Glenn.
“Obviously we think Raines has got fantastic experience and value with his 123 games in the AFL and Broughton we know really well and love and we’re happy to retain him.”
With all untried rookie selections having previously played senior football at state level, some extensively, Ambrogio believes that all of them have the potential to play senior football for the GC SUNS next season.
“I think that all of them if they work really hard could be a realistic chance of our senior team. They’ve all played at either SANFL, VFL, NEAFL or AFL level. All of them will be close enough if they work hard enough.”
