SUNS take to the court
Heavy rain and wild-weather conditions forced the Gold Coast SUNS indoors today, hitting the neighbouring basketball precinct for training.
GC SUNS Head of Fitness Paul Haines, under the watchful eye of new High Performance Manager Stephen Schwerdt, led the players through the light skills session that saw the boys work up a sweat.
Rookie Andrew Boston told goldcoastfc.com.au that the players were scheduled to train on Metricon Stadium’s training field, but despite the water drainage working overtime the team was required to move into the Carrara Basketball Stadium.
“Obviously we had to move out of our usual training ground, but we definitely still got a pretty good hit-out at the basketball centre,” said Boston.
“We had an intra-club match last Thursday so it was great to get the legs ticking over and do a bit of skills work ahead of the NAB Cup opener against Brisbane and Hawthorn this Saturday.”
The former Broadbeach Cats star said he still had not yet received any indication from GC SUNS senior coach Guy McKenna on whether he’d be making his AFL debut this weekend, but could assure fans and members that if selected he’d certainly be out to impress.
“I do hope that I get picked but we will just have to wait and see… I’ve been training really hard to put myself in contention for selection, so hopefully I can work my way into the side and reward the coaches with a good performance.”
“But for a young kid like me just to be playing AFL footy is amazing, and playing alongside guys like Gary Ablett and Tom Murphy can get you pretty excited.”
The squad concluded their work-out with a bit of light-hearted target practise, attempting to kick a series of balls into a near-by bin.
“We we’re just trying to have a bit of fun amongst each other with the ball,” Boston said.
