SUNS looking to dull Lions roar
VETERAN Campbell Brown says the Gold Coast SUNS are itching to taste team success against Brisbane this weekend, and will be looking to strike back against their Queensland rivals.
“We understand Brisbane have the wood over us having won the last four matches against us,” Brown told reporters on Wednesday.
“We won the first ever QCLASH but after that it’s been all Brisbane so we need to start evening up that ledger a little bit.”
Although the Gold Coasters certainly aren’t hitting the panic button with their hopes of making the finals still very much a genuine possibility, Brown said the team urgently needed a win under their belts after recording just one win in their last five matches.
“We need a win, we’ve won one game in five weeks of football so while everyone has been giving us a pat on the back because we have been competitive against some good sides the fact of the matter is we haven’t got the four points on too many occasions,” said Brown.
“It’s a huge game for the club, if we want to continue to look towards playing later in the year we need to start winning games of football, and we need to start winning this weekend.”
Brown’s experience and calmness under pressure was significantly missed in the dying stages of their earlier contest this year, the Lions escaping Metricon Stadium with the QCLASH trophy after the Gold Coasters were unable to unearth one more goal to run out as winners.
But with Guy McKenna’s fast-rising senior team and the Lion’s mix of club stalwarts and young guns coming through the ranks, Brown says he’s excited at what the bi-annual clash has in store for years to come.
“They’ve always been really close games and really fantastic contest,” he said.
“It just happens that Brisbane have ended up in front, they love the QCLASH just as much as we do and close games like that always make for better contests.”
