The GC SUNS swapped their first selection for 17-year-old dynamo Jaeger O'Meara in trade week, and then elected to upgrade Alik Magin and dedicate two selections to recruiting players from their local zone with three of their picks. Therefore, the second newest kids on the block were very quiet on Thursday night, with just one live pick. They left happy they got the best player available at pick No.24, Henry Schade, but defenders had to be on their radar given they let go Michael Coad (although he is a chance to be rookied next month) and Nathan Bock is 28.
What the recruiter said
"In the balance of it all, we were really keen to get a tall defender to start developing and we're lucky to have Nathan Bock. We're rapt to bring in a young tall defender who can learn from him over the next couple of years. Henry certainly has the size and physical and mental attributes, so we're really pleased to get him." Gold Coast SUNS list manager Scott Clayton.
Pick 24: Henry Schade
Clayton says: "We think he was the best player at that pick. He comes from a good footballing background. His father [Steven] played in a premiership for Glenorchy in Tasmania and a bit at Box Hill before that. He's a tall defender with a great leap and a really quality young man. He played senior football for North Hobart this year and was pretty good in the under 18 championships, and under 16s the year before that. We've very happy with him."
Pick 80: Alik Magin, rookie upgrade
Pick 88: Alex Sexton, local talent, Pick 91: Jackson Allen, local talent
Clayton says: "Alex was in the AFL-AIS Academy last year, and Jackson the year before, so they're both elite players. They're both on-ballers, athletic and really good players so we're really pleased as part of our local rules we can put them on the list."
