Streetsmarts SUNS Academy graduate Lachlan Gulbin says the Academy environment has him well prepared to adapt to life on the SUNS AFL list.

Gulbin became the latest product of the Streetsmarts SUNS Academy to earn his way on to the AFL list last week, secured by the club as a Pre-Selection ahead of the Rookie Draft.

He’s now one of 15 Academy graduates on the list.

“There were a few of us Academy boys who did a bit of pre-season with the AFL squad last year. That was a really great opportunity to get to know the boys and feel comfortable,” Gulbin said.

“I’ve been playing a bit of VFL this year too so I’m familiar with the environment I’m in.”

Gulbin joined former Academy teammate Leo Lombard for their first session as AFL footballers earlier this week and the 18-year-old reinforced the value of the Academy to local Gold Coast footballers.

“It’s a really good pathway for us and it gives hope for us boys in the Academy that we can one day get drafted,” Gulbin continued.

While the pre-draft nerves have now settled, Gulbin is eager to get to work under his new Senior Coach Damien Hardwick.

“It was a huge sense of relief [to be drafted]. It’s exciting but very nerve-racking in the lead-up.

“He [Dimma] is one of the best and he provides us with what we need to do. It’s just such a privliege to be coached by someone like him… I can’t wait to work with him next season.”

Like the rest of his draft class, Gulbin has his sights set on earning the chance to represent his home club in 2025.

“I think it would be lovely to debut. That’s the goal, but just to work as hard as I can and become the best footy player I can too.

“Whatever happens, happens.”
