Early in season 2016, Brisbane Lions legend Jonathan Brown labeled SUNS vice-captain Tom Lynch as the best young forward in the competition.
Huge wraps for a 23-year-old but certainly justified given Lynch is averaging four goals per game after seven rounds this year, sitting second in the Coleman Medal race behind Lance Franklin.
SUNS coach Rodney Eade has been involved in football at the top level for four decades and has seen first-hand some of the best forwards the game has produced.
The veteran mentor describes Lynch as ‘unique’, with his contested marking and ability to compete a particular standout.

“He’s certainly different and unique compared to other key forwards I’ve been involved with,” Eade told United Coaches Chat.
“But his greatest attribute, apart from his marking, is his ability to compete and stay in the contest and he’s a very competitive guy.
“He’s developing now into a good leader, he’s still got a little bit to go in that area but he’s certainly developing nicely. But his ability to influence a contest is terrific and he‘s kicking better so he’s taking the most of his opportunities at the moment which is great.”
The SUNS averaged 114 points per game (4th in the AFL) in its opening three weeks, but the scoring has dried up over the last four rounds, down to 77.5 points per game.
Despite the lack of impact on the scoreboard, Lynch has still managed to excel, kicking two bags of four and a bag of five in those four weeks.

Given Lynch’s age and the limited opportunities for his side, Eade predicts his prized forward can still significantly improve with additional support from his fellow forwards and better delivery from the team’s midfielders.
“He’s still only young, I think he’ll be better with a better side around him,” Eade said.
“So get some good support around him in the forward line, but certainly some good service from the midfield.
“We’ve got three or four of our good midfielders out so getting those back into the side will help him as well.”
