Gold Coast SUNS CEO Travis Auld has started the push for Metricon Stadium to host a regular Good Friday clash when the AFL eventually gives it the go-ahead.
AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou, who has been a staunch opponent of playing football on Good Friday, has admitted it is “inevitable” fixtures will be scheduled on the holiday in the future.
Auld has already contacted the AFL to push the GC SUNS’ case to host a game on that day each year, and he has advocated an annual clash with fellow expansion side Greater Western Sydney – the team his club plays this coming Saturday at home.
“I have been pushing this for a while; the expansion clubs are a great vehicle for testing new initiatives,” Auld told The Courier Mail.
“There is probably an opportunity to explore it with us against the Giants, given we could have a great rivalry for years to come.
“We are becoming of national interest. It would be a game each year football fans would tune in to.”
Giants CEO Dave Matthews has also thrown his support behind any move to put his club in a high-profile match-up over the Easter holiday period.
“As one of the two new AFL clubs, we want to build a big rivalry with the SUNS and we will consider any proposals to fixture these games accordingly, including over Easter,” Matthews said.
SUNS coach Guy McKenna said Good Friday football could replicate the success of playing on Anzac Day, and the Gold Coast is the perfect place to play to entice fans to travel for the game.
“I don’t think it has to be a blockbuster, so to speak, but to have two up-and-coming teams play on Good Friday just gives a great opportunity,” McKenna told Fox Sports News.
“You could have a day game in Melbourne or flip it and flop it and have the night game up here. Either way I think it makes great sense. This is a destination. Why not put some football on, as well, and capture some of that football market.
“I think here on the Gold Coast, people can come up, spend their Easter holiday here, get a fix of football, bit of chocolate on the weekend, sun on their body; I think it will be a great weekend.”
