The Gold Coast SUNS have signed Jasmyn Hewett from the Adelaide Crows on the deadline day for AFLW expansion signings.
Hewett was drafted by the Crows in 2017 and played seven games in her debut season.
She was set to add to that tally this year before an ankle injury sustained in an AFLW trial match ruled her out for the entire 2019 season.
The 25-year-old is a tall and athletic utility who is a strong contested mark.
Originally from South Australia, Hewett moved to Darwin in 2016 and played in the 2016/17 NTFL Womens League.
It was her first season playing AFL after switching from netball, and Hewett kicked six goals in her first match and 36 for the season to be named the league’s rising star and also finish runner-up in the league MVP.
SUNS Head of Women’s Football Fiona McLarty said the club was thrilled to have Hewett on board for 2020.
“We’re so excited to be able to secure Jas from the Crows,” McLarty said.
“She had a disappointing season with injury this year but we’re backing her to return to her best for us in time for the 2020 season.
“Jas is a fantastic character and ultimate professional so we’re confident she will really drive standards for us and bring a lot to the group.”
The SUNS’ AFLW list currently consists of 13 players, with the expansion phase of the AFLW Sign & Trade Period set to conclude tonight.
