The Gold Coast SUNS are set unleash another Academy product on the AFLW with Kaylee Kimber set to debut at Metricon Stadium on Saturday night.
Kimber’s AFLW dreams have been realised with Head Coach Cameron Joyce confirming the 19-year-old will feature in the SUNS’ massive AFLW Round 8 fixture against Melbourne tomorrow night.
Kimber, who was added to the SUNS AFLW list as an injury replacement player on the eve of Season Seven, says she’s thrilled to be running out for her first game.
“It’s a dream come true to make my AFLW debut,” Kimber said.
“I love this group, I’ve really enjoyed working with all the coaching staff and I can’t wait to pull on the guernsey on Saturday night.
“The chance to play my first game at Metricon Stadium, and in such a special round like Pride Round, is going to be really special.”
Hailing from Moranbah, approximately 200km south-west of Mackay, the versatile teenager has risen through the ranks of the SUNS Academy, representing Queensland at the 2022 AFLW Under 18 Championships as well as impressing for Southport throughout the QAFLW season.
She will be the third player from the region to make her AFLW debut for the SUNS, following in the footsteps of Lauren Bella and Wallis Randell, as well as becoming the 13th SUNS Academy product to feature this season.
Kimber is the sixth SUNS player to make their AFLW debut this campaign, following Jasmyn Smith, Claire Ransom, Georgia Clayden (all Round 1), Giselle Davies (Round 2) and Gabrielle Biedenweg-Webster (Round 5).
“It’s a well-earned opportunity for Kaylee. She really impressed in match sim against Sydney last week and we want to reward players that are in form and are performing,” Head Coach Cameron Joyce said.
“We’re really excited about her attack on the footy, both on the ground and in the air and we think she’ll acquit herself well.”
The SUNS will name its final team to face Melbourne on Friday evening.
The team will don its Pride Guernsey in this Saturday night’s clash against Melbourne at Metricon Stadium. Tickets are available here with gates opening at 6pm.
