SUNS midfielder Brayden Fiorini says the bye hasn’t wavered the SUNS momentum heading into the second half of the AFL season.

The SUNS will attack Sunday’s clash at the MCG against Carlton off the back of a mini mid-season break over its bye, but with three wins from its last four games under its belt and no signs of complacency returning back to the training park across the weekend.

“Going into the bye full of momentum has been great. We had a few days off before a run around on Saturday and now we’ll attack Carlton this week,” Fiorini said.

“Sometimes the first session back after a break is a bit rusty but I thought we were really sharp on Saturday, the energy’s up and about.

“We’ll have another good session on Thursday and then head down to Melbourne in a good space, mentally and physically.”

Despite overcoming two early deficits in its last two matches, Fiorini praised his side’s resilience and says both games showed a true reflection of the squad’s character.

After overcoming a 35-point deficit in Round 12 against the Crows, the SUNS will be eyeing a faster start on Sunday against a Carlton side desperate to turnaround its recent fortunes.

“Our backs were against the wall in both games. They were both good teams so it was great from the group to grind our way back into the game which really shows the character of this team,” Fiorini added.

“We know at their best they (Carlton) are a strong, proud footy club and we need to prepare for their best, as we have done every week.

“As long as we stick to the process, we think we can beat any team.

“Our last two months have been consistent and we feel like we’re heading in the right direction, but still have plenty of growth which is exciting.”

Despite a rewarding experience on and off the field throughout the 11-day stay in the Territory, new father Fiorini says the opportunity to spend time at home with family over the last week has been a blessing.

“We had the 10 days away in Darwin and William’s only 10 weeks old so he grew a fair bit during that stage. It was good to get back to him and spend some time with him and (partner) Molly.”
