A long AFLW off-season is just a matter of days from coming to a close as the GC SUNS open its AFLW campaign at Ikon Park on Saturday afternoon.
Ramping up for her fourth AFLW campaign for the SUNS, Season Six Club Champion Alison Drennan says the excitement is palpable within the squad.
“It’s been a long off-season, especially when we had the two seasons back-to-back last year,” Drennan said.
“Everyone is super excited. The nerves are up and about but everyone is just excited to get out there and get that first game under our belt.”
Continuing to build, improve and take steps forward has been a key focus for the SUNS throughout preparations for the 2023 season with the ability to run out strong four-quarter performances high on the list of priorities.
“We’ve put in a lot of work in the off-season, we’ve been very clear on what points in our game we want to work on,” Drennan added.
“As we’ve been improving on those, and the talent we’ve brought into the side too, we’re at the point where we can take that next step.
“Especially with our conditioning, that will allow us to play a four-quarter game at that high intensity.”
The SUNS begin the season away from the Gold Coast for a third straight season with Drennan saying the weekend’s trip to Melbourne will have a ‘business trip’ feel to it.
“Sometimes playing away from home helps you stay on task, keep your mind on the job. We’ll all be together for the weekend,” she continued.
“Hopefully we can go down there and get the job.”
Saturday’s game against the Blues will be live across Kayo and Fox Footy from 1pm on Saturday.
