Jared Brennan’s 173 AFL game career has come to a close, with the 29-year old advising the Gold Coast SUNS of his desire to retire from AFL football to further explore his post football career and spend more time with his young family.
GC SUNS, General Manager Football Operations, Marcus Ashcroft, confirmed that Brennan advised the club of his decision after weighing up whether he had the commitment to play on in 2014.
“Jared and his manager Tom Petroro notified the club of their decision this week, informing us that Jared had lost his passion and hunger for the game.
“While it is always sad to see one of your experienced players retire, we understand Jared’s decision and will assist Jared with his transition into the next phase of his life,” Ashcroft said.
Brennan, never one to enjoy the media spotlight, thanked the GC SUNS and its fans for their support over the last three years.
“I really want to thank the playing group and fans for their support and I wish the club all the very best in the future.”
Hailing from Darwin, Brennan grew up playing both rugby league and AFL.
He co-captained Northern Territory at the 2001 National Championships and achieved Under 18 All Australian selection in the same year.
Recruited by the Brisbane Lions in the 2002, he debuted for the Lions in Round 4, 2003 but it was in 2006 when he cemented himself as a regular senior player.
In 2008 Brennan took his game to another level, his form earned him selection for Australia in the 2008 International Rules fixture against Ireland.
In 2010, the GCSUNS recruited Brennan to the coast.
Brennan played 54 games with the GC SUNS, and finished the 2013 season having tallied the 4th most games for the club, sitting behind Gary Ablett (61), Trent McKenzie, (57) & Jarrod Harbrow (56).
Brennan finished 14th in the GC SUNS 2013 Club Champion award, having finished 7th in 2011 and 15th in 2012.
Ashcroft said it was important for the GC SUNS and its supporters to recognise the commitment Brennan had made to the club.
