After a late surge against the Casey Demons last week, an immediate and ferocious effort in the forward line from the opening bounce at People First Stadium on Saturday, delivered the SUNS a 125-point victory - the second biggest win in SUNS VFL history, 25.14 (164) to 5.9 (39).

Young half-forward flanker Lachie Gulbin’s consistent efforts contributed four goals of his own to the team’s 25.

“Oh, it felt amazing out there. I think we knew this week was a good opportunity to set the standard quickly,” Gulbin said.

“Losing last week, that's not what we wanted, so that was the main focus, to start quickly and that's what we did.

“I'm pretty happy, obviously, but that doesn't happen without all the boys delivering it to me. So, a bit of luck, but, yeah, everyone was super.”

The StreetSmarts Academy graduate has his sights set on debuting in the AFL this season, looking to his teammates for inspiration.

“I'm happy with the pre-season that I've had. I just keep trying to chip away and work on getting better and better each week and trying to put my hand up for selection,” Gulbin added.

Nick Holman's been a great role model for me, playing a similar role.

“Even just looking at Will Graham and Bailey Humphrey in the AFL at the moment as small forwards. They're probably the boys that I'm trying to model my game off.

“The forwards development coach, Richard Douglas, (has also) been really invaluable to me, even helping me out last year, playing a few games in the academy.”

On the back of the AFL’s nail biting one-point win over the Adelaide Crows, the VFL domination doubled the high spirits of the club.

“It's unbelievable. I think it just shows the direction the club's going in, especially beating the Crows, one of the top teams in the league this year,” Gulbin said.

“I can't wait for the season ahead.”

Round 4 of the SUNS VFL competition will resume on Saturday, 19 April due to the AFL Gather Round. The Gold Coast take on the Southport Sharks at Fankhauser Reserve at 12:05pm.
