The club will soon announce a star-studded list of VIPs who have volunteered to take the plunge into icy water for FightMND.
It will be a different take on the traditional Big Freeze seen at the MCG each year, with the SUNS’ DIY Freeze to instead feature a “dunk tank” where guests and players will take turns kicking or handballing a Sherrin at a target to dunk the VIPs.
Currently, more than 2,000 Australians are living with MND, and their average life expectancy is only 27 months.
GC SUNS CEO & FightMND Board Member Mark Evans will be one of the VIPs taking the plunge and said it was an important cause for the AFL industry to get behind.
“The Big Freeze is such an important event on the AFL calendar and at the SUNS we are delighted to help expand the campaign across the nation,” Evans said.
“We are extremely proud to be hosting an event to unite the Gold Coast community in the fight against Motor Neurone Disease and to help raise valuable donations and awareness for the cause.
“Make sure you follow our social media channels to find out who will take the plunge and to see all the highlights from the event.”
FightMND CEO Dr Fiona McIntosh said despite fighting the Beast that is MND for 10 years, there is still more to do.
“Since FightMND began in 2014, we have invested more than $85 million into vital MND research, and we are accelerating progress towards a treatment or cure for MND,” Dr McIntosh said.
“DIY Big Freeze events are a rewarding and fun way to bring the community together in support of such an important cause.
“It has been great to see the SUNS and the Gold Coast community team up to help us fight the beast.
“Everyone who comes along on the day is not only helping raise vital funds in the fight this insidious disease, they are also stepping up and fighting for everyone who has, or has had MND.
“You’re showing people living with MND that you are with them and that you care.”
