Gold Coast SUNS VFL Head Coach Tate Kaesler says his side will need to bring their best for tomorrow's VFL QClash against the in-form Brisbane Lions if they want to remain in touch with finals contention.

The Lions are sitting on an eight game winning streak, with the last five of those wins at home, meaning the SUNS are eyeing off their chance to knock the Lions off the winners list when they host the QClash at People First Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

"It's obviously a big game for us…I think the last time they were beaten is by us in Round 6," Kaesler said.

"We've had some ups and downs in that period of time where they've obviously sustained their success through that period…so it's going to be a really tough game for us."

Currently sitting in ninth on the VFL ladder, the SUNS will need to stay in the top 10 to qualify for the finals, with the VFL Wildcard Round allowing the teams in eighth to tenth to face off for a spot in an elimination final.

Despite the Lions' recent form, the SUNS know they have what it takes to get the win, after a comfortable victory away from home at the Round 6 QClash earlier this season.

The Lions are the last top eight side that the SUNS will play this home and away season, with Kaesler viewing it as a chance to see how they measure up against one of the top performing sides of the competition.

"We're really excited about the opportunity in front of us this week, and really looking forward to taking on a team that's in really good form."

"They're a really good clearance team, they've got some great contested ball players in that part of the ground…the big message from us is that we've got to compete and match them in the contest."

"We've got to take away their strengths…and we've got some great attributes ourselves. Our run and our carry is quite a strength of ours, so that's where we can potentially get them on the other side."

The SUNS are looking to bounce back after a 27-point loss to the GWS GIANTS last week, where their accuracy cost them, kicking 6.15 in a game that was well within reach until the last quarter. Kaesler says the SUNS will be looking to focus on quality shots at goal.

"When you kick those goals early in the quarter, it can put a lot of scoreboard pressure on the opposition. Unfortunately for us, we haven't been able to do that in the last few weeks, which then towards the end of the game obviously plays a big part."

"We can probably get one more kick or look for that extra option to get someone in a better spot to have a better shot."

In an exciting addition to tomorrow's QClash, former Melbourne Renegades cricketer Zak Evans has been named for his first taste of action in SUNS colours.

The club announced earlier this week it had lodged paperwork for Evans to join the club as a Category B Rookie ahead of the 2025 AFL season. Despite only officially joining the club this week, Kaesler said Evans has already had a chance bond with the team ahead of his first game.

"He's only been up here a week, but from a VFL perspective we’ve got him involved when we've travelled to Melbourne, to meet the guys, come to dinners, come to meetings…so he's got to know the guys over the last month so that's been really exciting."

"We just want him to come and enjoy the moment…and enjoy the opportunity to get out there on the big ground and just play footy, which he hasn't played for a long time."

Evans is one of six inclusions for Saturday’s crucial clash with the Lions as the SUNS eye a return to the VFL Top 8.

AFL-listed players Jy Farrar, Connor Budarick, Alex Sexton and Jed Walter have all been named in the side, as has Larke Medal winner Leo Lombard.

First bounce is at 12:50pm with early gates (Gate 3) open from 12:30pm, ahead of the AFL match at 4:35pm.

Saturday’s double header shapes as the highest-attended QClash at People First Stadium in history, and fans still planning to attend are encouraged to secure their tickets online now to avoid missing out.

Members and fans planning to use train services to attend this weekend’s match should be aware there will be rail closures between Varsity Lakes and Beenleigh.
