The Gold Coast SUNS have confirmed a five-player leadership group for the 2024 AFLW Season.
Tara Bohanna will lead the side as captain for a third season and will be deputised by vice-captain Jac Dupuy for a second consecutive campaign.
Bohanna and Dupuy both played all 11 matches of the SUNS’ record 2023 campaign, leading by example and combining for 28 goals in a dynamic partnership inside forward 50.
Bohanna and Dupuy will be supported by defending Club Champion Claudia Whitfort and a pair of newcomers into the leadership group in Season Seven Club Champion Charlie Rowbottom and Season Seven Players’ Player Georgia Clayden.
Both Rowbottom and Clayden have been part of the club’s emerging leaders cohort and have earned official leadership positions for the first time in 2024.
The 2024 leadership group was decided through an internal nomination process within the playing group, and strongly endorsed by the coaching staff and Board.
“It’s great to have a mix of players who have previously held leadership positions alongside players who have grown and developed during their time at the club, now moving into the leadership group for the first time,” Head Coach Cameron Joyce said.
“Tara, Jac and Claudia were fantastic as members of our leadership group in 2023 and our continued development as a squad is a testament to the standards they have set.
“It’s clear that Georgia and Charlie are both seen as role models by their peers as two players who lead by example on and off the field, and we’re excited to watch them both continue to grow as leaders.
“What’s also exciting is we’re in in a position now where we’ve got plenty of leaders right across the football club which is what we need to be the team we want to be.”
The SUNS face the Brisbane Lions and Western Bulldogs in pre-season matches in the coming weeks before a Round 1 clash against St Kilda at People First Stadium on Saturday, August 31.
