The LNP has committed to funding the expansion of the StreetSmarts Gold Coast SUNS Academy in Carrara if elected next month.
With more than 1,000 players in the Academy, the LNP’s $2 million commitment will deliver upgrades to changerooms, gym, training and recovery equipment and meeting rooms.
LNP Leader David Crisafulli said the Games On! commitment was part of the LNP’s mission.
“The LNP’s Games On! Policy will deliver a sporting legacy for Queensland, by supporting Queensland’s grassroots sporting clubs like the SUNS, “Mr Crisafulli said.
“We want to encourage more kids into sport, and we know that these local clubs are the backbone of Queensland communities.”
LNP candidate for Gaven Bianca Stone said the LNP’s $2 million commitment would deliver upgrades to the SUNS Academy training facilities.
“The LNP will support the Gold Coast SUNS Academy with major upgrades to meet the growing demand for their top-notch program,” Ms Stone said.
“The SUNS Academy is a key pathway into first-grade sports and the LNP’s upgrades to changing, meeting, gym, training and recovery facilities will help produce the next generation of AFL and AFLW stars.”
Gold Coast Suns player Jed Walter welcomed the announcement and said it was an important contribution to the Gold Coast.
“I joined the SUNS Academy when I was 13 and it was such a great experience for me to stay active and continue playing the sport I loved with others who shared that passion,” Walter said.
“As I grew older, the Academy then helped me strive towards my dream of becoming an AFL player.
“With close to 1,000 male and female participants, the Academy plays such an important role not just for the Gold Coast SUNS, but the entire Gold Coast community to encourage participation in sport and living a healthy lifestyle.
“The Academy is growing every year and we are seeing more Gold Coasters in the AFL and AFLW as a result. I would love to see the next generation be given every opportunity to follow in our footsteps and fulfill their dreams.”
