SUNS Midfielder Lachie Weller says 2025 is a chance to prove something to himself.

The 29-year-old has battled through a wretched run of injuries in recent years, which has included two ACLs, and says the prospect of running out in Opening Round to a packed People First Stadium is exciting.

“I feel great. It’s the first full pre-season I’ve done in a while, so physically and mentally I feel great,” Weller said.

“For me I haven’t played in an opener in a while so I’m really excited to have a big crowd here at home.

“I think last year I felt a bit disconnected from the group with rehab, and then obviously not being able to practice the game plan… but now I’ve got that good connection and more confidence in my game.”

Having managed no more than 11 games in each of the last three seasons, simply enjoying the opportunity to be back on the field is paramount for Weller.

“For me, it’s just about building confidence back in my game and being out there doing something I love again,” Weller said.

“I’m feeling confident. I was pretty flat the way I came back (in 2024) but looking back in hindsight, it was an achievement just to get back and play.”

Traditionally seen dashing off the half back flank, Weller has spent the majority of pre-season further up on a wing and hinted at the possibility of minutes on the inside in Friday night’s AAMI Community Series match against Sydney.

“I’ve been enjoying that role on the wing and this weekend I might come through the midfield a little bit, it just depends on the shape and balance of the team,” Weller added.

Weller, who himself made the move to the Gold Coast in 2018, has been impressed by what new recruits John Noble and Daniel Rioli have brought to the club with the pair expected to be in close quarters with Weller between the wing and the back flank.

“We got to see John play last week, and hopefully Dan this week. Their ability to take the game on and hit a target has been huge for us, but most importantly they’re just good people, and we need good people to make a good club.

“They’ve brought in a lot of experience and it’s great to have them around the club.”
