Primus: Smith and Dixon to Rise against Lions
TOWERING ruckmen Zac Smith and Charlie Dixon will need to throw the kitchen sink at Matthew Leuenberger, according to assistant coach Matthew Primus.
The giant 24-year-old was among the only positive for Brisbane Lions in their 19-point loss to Adelaide, finishing with a game-high 32 hit-outs, 11 disposals and three tackles.
Primus said Smith and Dixon were bound to have their hands full against the 204cm ruckman at Metricon Stadium this Saturday night.
“Leuenberger did a good job handling two last week but our guys (Smith and Dixon) are in pretty good form and have become a good combination not only in the ruck but up forward as well,” said Primus.
“It’s going to be a great battle… we want our guys to really throw themselves at him and put some real work in if he’s the only one out there.”
But former Port Adelaide ruck legend believed the GC SUNS talented ruck-duo would out-class the Lions versatile bigman.
“It’s going to be a pretty crucial contest, especially because of the way we go about wanting to play our football… but in the wet and slippery those big boys will definitely come into their own,” Primus said.
With almost 14,000 spectators helping create a sea of red and gold against St. Kilda in the side’s season opener, Primus said the team was hoping the supporters turned up in force for QCLASH V this Saturday night.
“Our supporters were outstanding in Round 1 as they brought a lot of support, voice and noise to the stadium,” Primus said.
“Playing our rivals we’d love to have the support come out again and give us a real boot.”
