The 18-year-old played out of his skin in the final NEAFL practice match against Southport at Metricon Stadium, racking up around 45 touches in a sweeping role off half-back.
A steadying influence in what was a strengthened backline for Josh Fraser’s team, Kolodjashnij formed an intimidating partnership with defender Rory Thompson - who was playing his first match of 2014 - and veteran Tom Murphy.
His trademark efficiency with the football had the club’s development staff grinning from ear to ear, with almost every one of his touches hitting a target.
“He reads the play really well and always seemed to make good decisions,” Fraser told goldcoastfc.com.au.
“Some of his run and carry in to the midfield was important for us and really helped set the tone for the afternoon.”
But his ability to take his game to the next level is what really impressed the GC SUNS NEAFL coach most. Now Fraser has challenged Kolodjashnij to better his performance after turning in a sublime hit-out first up against Aspley the week before.
“As good as he was against Aspley a week prior, we challenged him in a couple of areas of his game and he responded,” Fraser said.
“He demonstrated a willingness to improve his game and it was evident on Saturday.”
The 218-game former Magpie and SUN believes it’s only a matter of time before Kolodjashnij gets his chance on the big stage.
“It (recent performances) is going to give him a great opportunity to play senior football.”
