Learning she was one of three inaugural SUNS AFLW players was a special moment in more ways than one for Charlotte Hammans.

Hammans and her family are Foundation Members of the SUNS, meaning her link to the club stretches well beyond her years as part of the Women’s Academy.

As long-term members, the 17-year-old’s parents were arguably more excited than her by the news, however she’s keen for the 2020 AFLW season to roll around as quickly as possible.

“I got told after training the other day, it was just really exciting (and I’m) really looking forward to next year.” Hammans told SUNS Media.

The talented junior grew up on the Gold Coast, developing her craft in the boy’s program at the Burleigh Bombers, but the lack of elite women’s programs at the time never deterred her from pursuing football.

“It’s really, really awesome that you know I’ve come through the boys program, I’ve been playing for a long time,” said Hammans.

“To now be on a list is just awesome and hopefully that can inspire younger girls.

“You don’t necessarily have to start playing when you’re a bit older, you can start young and play with the boys and come all the way through.”

Hammans possesses excellent running ability, while it’s her goal sense and awareness that are crucial to the forward’s play.   

SUNS fans can expect the goal kicker to present well to the football, makes strong leads and uses her bodywork to take marks.

“I guess they could look for me in front of goals hopefully kicking a few goals.” Hammans said.
