Milestone man Jack Hombsch couldn’t have asked for a better script for his 100th AFL game.
Down by nine points heading into the final quarter against Fremantle at Metricon Stadium, the side rallied and were able to overrun their opponents with a gritty three-point win.
“It’s a great feeling and I won’t forget it,” Hombsch told SUNS Media post-match.
“The boys put in a really good effort and we’re certainly happy to take home the points.”
Hombsch has been involved in his fair share of thrilling victories, but said his first in SUNS colours was close to the top of the list.
“I think you’ve got to sit back and realise that every win is really valuable in AFL, but this is up there.
“Being my first win for the club, and being able to be in the circle with five or six other blokes with their first win was great.
“It was certainly something I’ll look back on fondly.”
There were some nervous moments for Hombsch and his fellow defenders at the death.
Gold Coast did well to lock the ball in the forward line and hit the lead, before Fremantle went on the counter with some dangerous long balls inside 50.
But it was some key defensive moments in the dying minutes which were crucial to icing the game and sealing the win in front of a home crowd.
“After last week’s game you just really want to win those close ones,” Hombsch said.
“I think it’s reward for effort.
“We had a lot of shots on goal in that third quarter and we couldn’t convert and then we did flick the switch in the last and we did kick them.”
“It’s a great relief and a great effort.”
Resilience has been a key theme in Hombsch’s 100 games to date, and he said it was resilience from the playing group which got them over the line on Sunday.
“It shows a lot about how, it’s a young group, but the resilience and the composure to get a few goals kicked on us and be a couple of goals down at three quarter time and to hang tough and to fight it out again,” Hombsch said.
“I think we’ll learn a lot from that and it’ll give us plenty of confidence going forward.
“After last week’s close game, to show we can win this one, we go in next week ready to go again with the belief that we’ll win it as well.”
