For Brandon Matera, running out alongside the sole Indigenous captain of an AFL side this Saturday will be a great honour.

The SUNS travel to Alice Springs to face Melbourne as part of the Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round.

“There hasn’t been many indigenous captains, to have one captain us on the day is going to be a big thrill for us boys and the AFL as well,” he said. 

“He’s a great leader.”

goldcoastfc.com.au can reveal a Willy Wag Tail (Djiji djiji) totem designed by Luther Cora will represent Matera on the 2017 Indigenous Guernsey.

“The totem represents my family back home,” he said.

“It’s a big round for all us boys to represent our families and where we come from.”

Echoing the words of Jarrod Harbrow and Steven May earlier in the week, Matera was excited by the prospect of playing in the red centre as part of the Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round.

“This year is even bigger playing in Alice Springs,” he said.
