Gold Coast will be without captain Steven May for the Cairns clash against the Western Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon with scans confirming a hamstring injury.

General Manager of Football Operations, Marcus Ashcroft confirmed to the Optomo Injury Report the 25-year-old was only likely to be sidelined for one week.

“Steven got a scan today [Tuesday], real low level tightness in his hamstring,” Ashcroft said.

“We won’t push him to play this week, we’ll get him through this weekend with rehab, with a view to play the following weekend.”

Fellow defender Jack Leslie is also set to miss a week after an awkward fall in the NEAFL game on Saturday.

“There were fears he may have fractured his fibular,” Ashcroft said.

“We’ll test him later this week but I would have thought he was unlikely to play this weekend, with a view to play the following week.”

Unfortunately the expected timeframe for midfielder Jarryd Lyons to return to the SUNS line-up is three to four weeks.

“Jarryd’s scans came back not too bad,” Ashcroft said.

“We think at this early stage it was a bit of low level bruising, a little bit of syndesmosis with his ankle strain.

“With his rehabilitation program, the way he looks after himself, the three to four week timeframe is achievable.”

Meanwhile, Brandon Matera (foot) will be a test ahead of Round 18.

“We tested him last week and he didn’t quite come up,” Ashcroft said.

“Same again this week, we’ll give him a chance to play subject to him getting through training.”
