Gold Coast’s ruck stocks are set to receive a healthy boost in the next fortnight, after ruckmen Tom Nicholls and Dan Currie were late withdrawals from round one of the NEAFL.
Nicholls was unavailable for selection last weekend due to a shoulder complaint and is regarded an outside chance to make a comeback this week.
However, Currie is on track to be passed fit by the club’s medical staff in the lead up to round three according to GM of Football Operations, Marcus Ashcroft.
“Dan has had some on-going knee soreness, and we have tried to manage him through the pre-season campaign,” he said.
“He played some pretty good footy during that period and last week was a bit sore, so we decided to err on the side of conservatism and keep him out.
“Dan will get tested this week during training but will more than likely play.”
However, Nicholls may require another week on the sidelines as the Gold Coast big man looks to overcome a shoulder injury.
“Tom will be another to be tested as the week goes on; at this early stage in the week, he will more than likely won’t play.”
In more promising news, midfielder Mitch Hallahan is a good chance to be in the frame for selection with his troubled hamstring improving by the day.
“Mitch got a bit tight after the game the weekend prior in the reserves, and we didn’t want to take any risks with him so he missed last weekend’s game,” Ashcroft said.
“Early signs this week are pretty positive. He’ll train as normal, and if he gets through the week, and if he does that he’ll play on the weekend.”
