Many factors go into deciding what path to take in life. And it’s no different for AFL footballers.

But when Adam Saad contemplated his football future, there was never any doubt he’d put pen to paper to remain a SUN.

After being overlooked in multiple drafts, the 22-year-old was selected by Gold Coast with pick number 25 in the rookie draft at the end of in 2014, and has since lived somewhat of a fairytale football story.

The former Coburg Lion made his debut in round one against Melbourne before earning himself a Rising Star Nomination for an enthralling four quarter performance against Brisbane in round five, 2015.

Known for his ability to run and carry out of defense, Saad almost instantaneously became a beloved fan favourite throughout his 16 games last year.

In his debut season, he finished second overall in the competition for running bounces and has emulated this form already in 2016.

“It’s been quite a journey, a long journey for me, but to play 20 odd games now for the Gold Coast SUNS has been a privilege and I’m hopeful I can build on that this year and hopefully in the next coming years,” Saad told SUNS TV.

When it came to putting pen to paper to secure the next step in his footballing journey, three definitive factors influenced Saad. For one, it was his personal relationship with senior coach Rodney Eade.

“The club took a chance on me in the rookie draft two years ago, Rocket’s [Eade] been a big influence, a big part of my footy career so far.

“He backs me in, has a lot of faith in me to play me every single week and I guess I just love playing with the players on the field as well.

“I’m just really happy that I’ve re-signed and can I can show a bit of faith for the club and to Rocket for giving me the chance.”

While Saad admits the team may not be sitting where they’d like on the premiership ladder, he has no doubt in the future direction of the team.

“We’re building something special, we’re going through a bad patch at the moment but I feel like we’re heading down the right direction,” he said.

“I’m really privileged to pull on the jumper every single week and play for this great club.”

And finally, the Gold Coast, with its crystal blue skies and almost non-existent winters, has won him over.

“It was tough early on, I’m really close to my family and my friends, I guess I’ve really adapted to the lifestyle here,” he said.

“I think it’s a home away from home now. I love the weather, I love playing for the footy club, I just love everything about the Gold Coast. I don’t like the singlet tans but I think I can get used to that.”
