Newly appionted captains of the Gold Coast SUNS, Steven May and Tom Lynch, have penned a letter to fans of the Club.
Dear fans,
We are both incredibly proud to be appointed captains of the Gold Coast SUNS. As kids growing up you dream of captaining an AFL team. For it to be real is not just an honour, but also humbling.
It feels extra special to captain a club that you actually helped establish, there are not too many people in the history of sport that can say that. We now enter a new era for the Gold Coast SNS.
With new captains, nine new players and the move into our new training and administration base in the New Year, we will be a new look team in 2017. Having filled in as co-captains of the team for the final seven games of the 2016 season, we have had a taste of the responsibilities that come with leading an AFL club. But we still have plenty to learn. It’s going to be a big task but we are up for the challenge.
Together we’re hoping to really drive individual and team standards and lead with energy on and off the field to ensure we can provide the Gold Coast with a team they’re proud of. Although we drive a hard line, we love the players here at the footy club and want to ensure that every single one has the opportunity to succeed. Away from footy we are both people who care for our teammates and that will remain a core part of our approach.
Thankfully for us, we have the likes of Gary Ablett, Matt Rosa, Michael Rischitelli, Michael Barlow and Jarrod Harbrow who all have heaps of leadership experience to lean on if we need a hand. The likes of Dave Swallow, Touk Miller, Peter Wright and Kade Kolodjashnij have all already put their hand up and are excited to help. Unlike the older, more established Victorian clubs, we will shape the Gold Coast SUNS history.
We have both been at the club since the start, we know what the players and fans have been through over the past six years and it’s our goal to bring success to this city. The only reason we’re here is because the local community wanted an AFL club on the Gold Coast and were prepared to run a campaign to win the 17th AFL licence.
Our history may be brief but it is proud. Everything we do is helping to build a legacy – a legacy that will grow over the decades ahead and that will be something everyone at the SUNS is responsible for. We want to be the club that delivers for our Gold Coast community. We want to be the national sporting club they love, respect and are proud to call their own. Finally, thanks to everyone for the messages they have sent offering their congratulations. To everyone who has either contacted us directly, written to the club or have been active on social media, thanks so much for your support, it’s greatly appreciated.
