Veteran Gold Coast defender Greg Broughton will need to get through Wednesday’s main training session but is expected to be passed fit ahead of Saturday’s game against Collingwood at Metricon Stadium.

The in-form backman was subbed out of the side’s 52-point loss to Hawthorn in Launceston, after reporting back spasms to the club’s medical staff. He was replaced midway through the third quarter by Jesse Lonergan.

If the former Fremantle player lines up on Saturday, he’ll be running out for his 100th game at AFL level.

GC SUNS High Performance Manager, Stephen Schwerdt, updated goldcoastfc.com.au on Broughton’s minor back complaint.

“It was unfortunate for Greg; he had a back spasm during the game and it progressively got worse, so in the end the coach decided enough was enough and subbed him off,” Schwerdt said.

“He’s had a few light days since the game but it’s been good to see him come good.

“We think he’ll train tomorrow at our main session, and then should be okay.

“So (it’s) only a minor setback for Greg.”

Unfortunately, the news isn’t so good for medium-sized defender Jeremy Taylor, who faces two to three weeks on the sidelines with a troublesome Achilles.

It was initially anticipated Taylor would be available following the NEAFL team’s scheduled bye round, but further assessment showed he would need more rehab to repair the injury.

“The plan with Jeremy was it’d take a week or two to get him right and back playing, but that hasn’t really worked,” Schwerdt said.

‘Every time we’ve tried to up his workload he’s got sore, so we’re going to have a take a more cautious approach and back off for the next three weeks and a take a longer- term view and give him a taste to get right.

“He’ll probably miss a couple of weeks, maybe three, then we can get him back into the swing of things.”
