CENTRE-HALF forward Steven May has given goldcoastfc.com.au an exclusive insight into the team’s gut-wrenching 2-point loss to the Brisbane Lions in QCLASH 5 in a match which saw the home-side fall away during the final minutes of the heated contest.

Post-match, the talented 21-year-old was inspired by the heart and fight shown by his teammates during a thrilling fifth instalment of the bi-annual QCLASH series, however admitted the loss to their closest AFL rival was devastating.

“The feeling is just so stale, we threw a lot at them and were just trying to get at them because we had to fight back,” said May.

“Really happy with the boys though, we didn’t give up on it and the body language around the ground was positive, but to lose to the Lions in the QCLASH, on our home turf, is pretty devastating.”

Despite never giving in, there was to be no repeat of the GC SUNS first round heroics where they rallied to claw back a 19 point deficit to down St Kilda, instead the Lions responded each time it looked as though the momentum had swung in favour of the home team, the 21 point half time deficit proving too big for Coach Guy McKenna’s charges.

May saying their ability and willingness to stay in the contest until the final siren had lifted the spirit around the locker-room.

“If we’re down at half-time, we’re not going to get smacked, we’re going to make sure we give it a real crack.”

GC SUNS senior coach Guy McKenna gave an honest assessment of tonight’s performance in his post-match media conference.

“We didn’t make the most of our opportunities and gave them too many and clearly they took advantage of those.”

“Certainly our effort, want and desire to run out games and stay in the contest was pleasing… after a poor second quarter we probably won the second-half but as much as we would have liked we came up short.”

With Port Adelaide showing great promise after their opening two rounds against Melbourne and GWS Giants, May said the players could not hamper on the loss for two long as they prepare to face off against the AFL powerhouse at Metricon Stadium next week.

“We can’t mope on the loss though; we have Port Adelaide next week so we have to move on and try to get Brisbane next time.”
