The Gold Coast SUNSETS conquered all before them at last weekend’s AFL Queensland Under 17 Youth Girls State Championships in Yeronga.
After spending the best part of the last month utilising Gold Coast’s Metricon Stadium headquarters, the SUNSETS progressed through the carnival undefeated to avenge their heartbreaking one-point loss in last year’s decider.
In Sunday’s Grand Final, the SUNSETS accounted for the Sunshine Coast Storm in pristine conditions for football.
Young gun, Ruby Blair, was rewarded for her outstanding carnival with the Julia Price medal for the player of the tournament following four stellar performances across the tournament.
“It was fantastic to see the high level of talent that exists within female football in Queensland,” SUNSETS coach Michael Gugliotta told goldcoastfc.com.au.
“The club is really looking to being a part of the new National Women’s competition in 2017.”
With the Gold Coast SUNS hopeful of securing the rights to a women’s side in the national competition set to be launched in 2017, the SUNSETS program was a significant step towards achieving that target, as well as helping grow the game in Queensland.
