Gold Coast jumped into the top six for the first time this season after an 89-point thumping of Brisbane at Coorparoo on Saturday.
The Gold Coast SUNS’ late charge towards a finals berth continues after the 23.12 (150) to 9.7 (61) victory, which places Gold Coast in sixth place on percentage over Redland.
The two sides traded goals early in the first term but the Suns kicked the last three for a 21-point lead at quarter-time.
They extended the margin to 43 by half-time and saved their best for the third term, where the Suns kicked five goals to none for a match-winning 76 points at the last break.
The deficit reached 100 points for the Lions midway through the last, but they finished with four of the last six goals.
Danny Stanley (25 disposals) was prolific for the Suns with Jarrod Garlett – who took one of the marks of the season during the game – also in superb form with 18 disposals, six tackles, five inside 50s and three goals.
Peter Wright took 10 marks and booted five goals, while Andrew Raines, Greg Broughton and Tyrone Downie were also important for the Suns.
Lions’ academy member Ben Keays was outstanding, collecting 33 disposals and seven clearances in a best-on-ground display.
Mitch Golby (35 disposals, eight clearances and six inside 50s) was also terrific alongside Archie Smith, Hugh Beasley and Tim Cutler.
