Gold Coast SUNS Head of Fitness Paul Haines has revealed the players will be confronting the surprise element when they head to Arizona for the clubs High Altitude Training Camp.
"They have got a general structure of the program, but in terms of the detail we will be keeping that to ourselves," said Haines.
We want them to just see what they have to do for the day, and then do it with not many questions asked.
"They will be expected to do the program that we set as well as possible, and build a bit of resilience and mental toughness while they are doing it."
Haines says the program in Arizona has been designed to resemble what the players are doing here on the Gold Coast.
"We have made a few adjustments to last years training program in Arizona," he said.
"We will be mirroring what we are doing here at the football club throughout pre- season."
We will be doing a lot of conditioning, a lot of weight training and a few other different activities.
Haines was mindful that the High Performance Team would need to keep an eye on how the squad was coping with the rigorous program.
"We are going to be monitoring everything very closely - their wellness and how they are recovering from sessions," he said.
Yes we do want to train them very hard while we are over there, but it will be periodised properly so there is minimal risk of guys injuring themselves.
"We are quite confident the program we have set will get a lot of benefits out of it.
Haines says the camp will also present a great opportunity for the new High Performance Team to get to know the playing group and establish relationships with them.
"It is massive for us so we can build a bit of rapport with the players."
While we are over there we will be spending a lot of time with them, so we can get to know the individuals more.
Haines says there is also flexibility within the program to cater for individuals within the squad.
"There is a main squad program, but there is a whole group of individuals within that squad, so we have to make allowances for that," he said.
We can individualise their load and training program as much as we can, and we need to do that where we can.
The training camp will also give a good gauge on the mental toughness within the group; something Haines is looking forward to.
"We have got a lot of information on the guys, and how much training they have been able to tolerate over the past two years, which is very useful."
"When we get over there we will have a very good idea of how resilient they are."
