After sharing in the team’s first ever AFLW win at Metricon Stadium on Saturday, SUNS AFLW defender Jordann Hickey is confident heading into another historic match in Round 3.
The SUNS will host the Brisbane Lions in the first QClash, with state pride on the line for both proud clubs.
But Hickey, who in Round 1 became the first female from Alice Springs to play in the AFLW, knows the team’s style of play will stack up against the Lions’.
“It’s definitely just to keep playing our brand of footy which will help us get over the line,” Hickey told SUNS Media was the focus this week.
“Our effort and intent has been awesome since Round 1 so if we keep bringing that I think that will really help us get the win again.”
The 25-year-old has already had a taste of the AFLW experience.
Hickey was drafted to Melbourne for the 2019 season but wasn’t able to crack the team to make her debut.
Selected by the SUNS as a delisted free agent, the Territory product made an immediate impact to earn a Round 1 berth.
It was even sweeter when Hickey was able to experience her first AFLW win in front of a home crowd last weekend.
“It was definitely something I’ll remember forever, especially winning it at our very first home game,” Hickey said.
“The support from the crowd was amazing, especially when we were getting on a roll.
“It definitely helped us keep going.”
Originally recruited as a forward, Hickey’s first season as a SUN has seen her switch to the opposite end of the ground.
She said it was easy to adjust to a new position in defence given her footballing history.
“It’s been something different but when I first started playing footy I was in the backline so it’s kind of throwing me back to the good old days,” she said.
“Especially having DJ (Darryl White) there, it really helps and he’s made it a lot easy to help me learn it.”
The AFLW match this weekend is also part of a double-header with the male Marsh Community Series match against Geelong.
The QClash kicks off at 4:10pm with the Marsh Community Series match to follow at 6:40pm.
