The Gold Coast SUNS and Metricon Stadium broke through 100,000 guests for the 2014 home and away season after a crowd of 21,354 attended Sunday afternoon's match against the Sydney Swans.
Sunday's crowd was the largest of the season at Metricon Stadium, and takes the average attendance at home in 2014 to 16,805, up over 17% on 2013.
The crowd against the Swans was also the third highest at Metricon Stadium, only shadowed by the crowd of 23,302, against Collingwood in 2011 and 21,485, that attended the inaugural match at Metricon Stadium against Geelong in 2011.
GC SUNS CEO, Travis Auld forecasts even stronger crowds in the coming weeks, with Geelong and Collingwood flying north for matches at Metricon Stadium.
"Our supporters have in a short time developed a real passion to come to the footy and support their team and we will need that support when we take on Geelong and Collingwood at home over the next few weeks, promising to draw big crowds once again."
Early ticket sales indicate that up to 10,000 people will travel from interstate to the Gold Coast for these two matches, with the Collingwood match scheduled to be played during the Victorian school holidays.
“In our first year we had over 6,000 visitors travel to the Gold Coast for the Collingwood match and an economic study commissioned by the club suggested the game generated about $5 million in spending, about 95 per cent of which goes to local Gold Coast businesses,” Auld said.
The GC SUNS are also witnessing significant growth in TV Audience. As of Round 12, 2014, the club has seen a year-on-year increase of 13% in average tv audiences.
