Scott West is one of the most decorated players in the history of the Footscray and Western Bulldogs Football Clubs, but allegiances in his household may be split during his former club’s clash with the Gold Coast SUNS on Sunday at Metricon Stadium.
The seven-time Bulldogs Best and Fairest and Team of the Century member told ABC Radio during last weekend’s clash with St Kilda clash that one of his sons was wearing a Gold Coast jersey to the game at Etihad Stadium.
“He’s got the Gold Coast jumper on. I know a lot of Bulldogs supporters won’t be happy about that,” West admitted to the ABC Grandstand team.
“Last time they played here, Scott Clayton was good enough to get him down in to the rooms and have a look at the boys. He loves Jaeger O’Meara and Gary Ablett, and why wouldn’t you, with the talent they’ve got.
“He’s jumped on the bandwagon like a lot of other people.
“He wants No. 1 on (his jumper). I think he’s just hedging his bets at the moment to see who the next best player will be.”
The hard-nosed midfielder, who came perilously close to winning a Brownlow Medal a number of times throughout his career, said he had been impressed with what he had seen of his son’s favourite team this season.
“What I saw of the Gold Coast a couple of weeks ago against North Melbourne....I’m really looking forward to seeing if they can reproduce that.”
Sunday’s match is the annual Family Day at Metricon Stadium, with several free activities dotted around the ground, including a petting zoo, water slide, mini-golf and a mechanical football.
