Kolodjashnij wins round 10 NAB AFL Rising Star nomination

There are those who say Kolodjashnij should have been nominated before this, such has been the impact he has had since his AFL debut in the second round against Fremantle.

Kolodjashnij has played in seven of the SUNS’ nine games so far and has certainly lived up to Coach Guy McKenna’s opinion of him.

Gary Ablett is cleared by the Match Review Panel

Gary Ablett ducked the hangman’s noose last night (Monday) to ensure the SUNS remain in the hunt to again collect the Brownlow Medal and Rising Star double after Kade Kolodjashnij was judged the best younger player of the round.

The hysteria driven by the Melbourne media that Ablett had cost himself a shot at a third Brownlow Medal with an errant elbow to Bulldog Liam Picken, in the wake of the SUNS’ 45-point AFL round 10 victory, had died to a whimper by yesterday morning and was officially silenced by the match review panel last night.

Gold Coast coach Guy McKenna will speak to the AFL umpires coach about what he perceives as roughhouse tactics used to curtail Gary Ablett…

The SUNS coach has dared opponents to employ similar tactics against his champion midfielder in the future.

He expects Adelaide coach Brenton Sanderson to speak with Brendan McCartney after the Bulldogs' relative success against Ablett at the weekend.

McKenna has given his young team a gentle reminder that while it's great to stick up for a teammate, they also have to do it within the rules”

Their stellar start to the AFL season could come a cropper in the next month but Gold Coast coach Guy McKenna is remaining calm.

The Suns have powered to third on the ladder with a 7-2 record.

But their next six fixtures will determine whether they belong in the top four or not.

They head to Adelaide this week, with trips to play West Coast, and Hawthorn in Tasmania, in conditions that will prove a chilly contrast to southern Queensland.

Home games against fellow top-five teams Sydney, Geelong and Collingwood will also provide no relief.

In the wake of Wednesday night’s thrilling State of Origin match between Queensland and New South Wales, Michael Voss has called on the AFL to revisit the representative concept

Should we be making decisions based on the fact that one player or two players might get injured in a whole game?

You're talking about 40 players and the enormity of the game and the passion and drive and how special it is and how much players do invest in the game and the code itself.

(It’s) about being able to drive passion in your state.

I think if you put the right form around them, rather than doing the Australian series [International Rules], why not the State of Origin?
