Although the Gold Coast SUNS fell to Hawthorn by 53 points on a miserable day in Launceston last Saturday, many consider the 22 that took the field to be close to the SUNS’ best outfit.
Will the same 22 step out onto Metricon Stadium this Saturday to take on the Magpies, or will coach Guy McKenna swing the axe as his team looks to solidify their position in the top eight?
goldcoastfc.com.au explores five players in the mix for senior selection.
#27 Clay Cameron
Cameron has played six senior games for the GC SUNS in 2014 and continues to play his role for the team in the reserves.
What they said…
“While he is continuing to improve his ability to contest one-on-one, Clay is starting to show glimpses of his offensive prowess through his counter attack out of half-back. Has shown he is capable of competing at the elite level, and is working hard to earn a senior call-up.”
- GC SUNS Reserves Coach, Josh Fraser
#29 Tom Murphy
Murphy has been a cornerstone of consistency in the NEAFL and was again among the best on the weekend with 22 possessions, seven marks and a couple of goals to his name.
What they said…
“Tom continues to play a key role for us down back, and certainly has been a vocal leader for much of the season. Our younger players have gained valuable experience playing alongside him, and given his reliability, could fill a hole at senior level if called upon.”
- GC SUNS Reserves Coach, Josh Fraser
#33 Aaron Hall
Hall shone for the NEAFL SUNS against Redland, picking 28 disposals, nine inside 50s and kicking 3.2 on his way to picking up best-on-ground honours.
What they said…
“Aaron definitely took a step forward to reclaiming his place as a first-choice AFL footballer with a clear best-on-ground performance against Redland. He added a touch of class through our midfield, and showed a great balance of inside and outside work.”
- GC SUNS Reserves Coach, Josh Fraser
#34 Jack Hutchins
Hutchins found form in the reserves last weekend, with 18 disposals, five clearances and two goals. Hasn’t played seniors since round six against GWS but remains in the mix.
What they said…
“Jack was among our best contributors last week, and amassed 18 touches and two goals in his most recent performance. He is beginning to utilise his strong body around the stoppages, and is doing all the right things.”
- GC SUNS Reserves Coach, Josh Fraser
#40 Sean Lemmens
After playing the first 10 games of the season in the seniors, Lemmens has missed the last four while learning his trade in the NEAFL. The running half-back had 13 disposals against Redland.
What they said…
“Sean turned in a solid performance in our match against Redland last weekend. He competed hard, and continues to take on board constructive feedback from the development staff.”
