Harbrow runs riot in SUNS emphatic victory
He might have already been in career best form but Jarrod Harbrow seemed to kick into another gear tonight, taking it right up to North Melbourne as the Gold Coast SUNS scored an emphatic 15-point victory in wet and miserable conditions at Metricon Stadium.
The aggressive on-baller was second to Gary Ablett in the leading possession-getters, with the majority of his 30 disposals leading to goals at crucial times throughout the encounter.
Speaking exclusively with goldcoastfc.com.au as the GC SUNS celebrated their fifth win of the season, Harbrow said the side’s ability to overcome an early 25-point deficit to take the lead and sustain it spoke volumes of the growing confidence among the playing group.
“We really came out and made our opportunities around goals count after failing to make them hurt on the scoreboard in the opening term,” he said.
“We really began to gain momentum heading into the half-time break, and we knew that once we had the lead going into the third quarter that we would back ourselves in because that is our strength, so it was good to make sure we were able to come away with the result.”
Astonishingly, the Kangaroos continued to let Harbrow run free in his pursuit of the football a despite the North Queenslander wracking up a series of contested possessions during the third term.
While commentators and team mates heaped praise on Harbrow, the lively swingman was more interested complimenting his midfield team mates, saying there was a growing buzz around the Club as the side continues to build momentum, taking their win-loss record to 5-6.
“It’s definitely exciting to see how far this team can go this season, and what we can achieve after the mid-season break.”
Senior Coach Guy McKenna saying the team’s ability to fight back after a slow opening term was impressive.
“I thought the boys showed a lot of resilience,” said McKenna.
“We certainly came in with a plan to attack in the first quarter, and while they dominated and certainly pressured us early, I thought after quarter-time the boys showed poise and resilience and our ability to run out the game was super.
With the Gold Coasters now one win outside the top 8, McKenna said his side would dare to dream but would continue to put their main emphasis towards constant improvement and development as a team.
“Our goal if you like would always be to make finals, but our immediate and long term goal is to produce fourth quarter football,” he said.
“If we do that, consistently, then we give ourselves a chance but we’re certainly not looking too far… we have to take it one week at a time and continue to deliver our effort and play the style of football we want to play.”
