The playing group visited a number of schools and community groups across the City during an eight hour blitz with particular focus on schools located in the thriving and rapidly expanding Northern Growth Corridor.
It was at Mudgeeraba Creek School where Injured star and Gold Coast Schools Ambassador Nathan Bock along with exciting rookies Andrew Boston and Clay Cameron received the biggest cheer, the trio delivering the first SHINE schools program for SUNS 2013 Community calendar.
GC SUNS Multicultural Officer - Michael Gugliotta, said the encouraging feedback from the last year’s SHINE program had convinced the SUNS to remain committed to delivering the schools program throughout the 2013 AFL Season.
"The SHINE program has been around for three years now and we’ve almost booked out for the rest of the year, which demonstrates just the program’s effectiveness in educating the students on the benefits and rewards for living a healthy and active lifestyle.”
Each Year 4 Mudgeeraba Creek student received a free colouring booklet from the SUNS players, designed specially to educate the young minds on the importance of healthy eating, beach safety and the benefits of being actively involved in recreational sport.
Mudgeeraba Creek State School Year 4 teacher – Simone McKenna, told goldcoastfc.com.au the Primary School was pleased to be involved in the program for a second consecutive year.
‘We feel very fortunate to be able to do the program again this year, and I know the kids really enjoy learning the importance of leading an active and healthy lifestyle through the SUNS community visits,” said McKenna.
McKenna said it was the promotion of good health that had won of the support of the school’s Administration and Parent & Friends Association.
“What we love most about the SHINE program is that it aligns with our school’s curriculum for Education Queensland; by promoting good health through AFL it allows the kids to understand that that sport is a part of the community and that holds great interest for them.”
“Today we were able to spread the word to Mudgeeraba Creek’s State School students and with the assistance of Nathan (Bock), Clay (Cameron) and Andrew (Boston) we were definitely able to teach the kid’s some of the food groups they should be enjoying at recess and lunch.”
