NEWLY-crowned AFL Rising Star Jaeger O’Meara came close to capping off what would have been the most remarkable debut season in AFL history, with the star teenager named second runner-up in the Gold Coast SUNS Club Champion tonight.
Just days after becoming the first Gold Coast player to win the Ron Evans Medal, O’Meara was again recognised for his blistering start to the AFL – polling 204 votes behind Dion Prestia (213) and Gary Ablett (260) at the Club’s end-of-season Awards night.
At just 19 years old, it’s frightening to think what O’Meara will be able to achieve during his career.
In 2013, the gun midfielder averaged 22 disposals and was one of just two Gold Coast SUNS players to feature in all 22 Premiership fixtures.
And despite having to be monitored closely by the Club’s high performance staff after feeling the effects of a rigorous first-year campaign, O’Meara still managed to finish among the SUNS best on-field performers from Round 18 onwards.
GC SUNS Assistant Coach Andy Lovell told goldcoastfc.com.au O’Meara’s podium standing as the Club’s best and fairest second runner up highlighted his amazing debut season and professionalism.
“As a first-year player he was able to play all 22 games for the year and really made an impact as an inside midfielder,” he said.
As well as making an impact on the scoreboard, kicking 16 goals from 27 shots, O’Meara finished as the team’s highest leading tackler, ending the Premiership Season in the top tier of the competition (111).
“Jaeger’s ability to work offensively and defensively had been extraordinary,” Lovell said.
“His run, power, and ability to use the ball under pressure was very good.”
Looking ahead, Lovell says he’s looking forward to watching O’Meara back up his impressive season alongside mini-draft pick Jack Martin next year.
“For a first-year player to have had his sort of numbers is remarkable.”
