In this week's episode of Talking Tactics, Gold Coast SUNS senior coach Guy McKenna reflects on his side's loss to St. Kilda and the areas needing improvement ahead of their final Premiership battle against Greater Western Sydney.
"We only had 28 tackles which was totally unacceptable," McKenna said.
"We didn't put the Saints under any sort of pressure. When we did have the footy we got results, but 50% of the time we turned it over in some bad spots and paid we price."
After containing the Saints promising early start, the opposition kicking six goals in the second quarter, turning a two-goal scoreboard deficit into a four-goal lead.
Running away as deserved victors, the Saints closed out the encounter on top of every major key performance indicator, including contested possession (127-107), clearances (32-20), disposals, (418-332) and tackles (43-27).
Amazingly, it was their constant supply inside-50 which hurt the SUNS most, tallying 28 more entries in attack.
Despite the disappointing performance, McKenna still managed to find plenty of positives.
"I thought Danny Stanley continued to have the year he has, and I thought Dion forced Stevens into areas he didn't want to go," he said.
"Gary competed hard against Jones and there were times we stared to look good when Gary started to look good."
Fully aware the Giants will be swinging from the rafters as they farewell inaugural Head Coach Kevin Sheedy, McKenna said the Gold Coasters would need to match the Giants thirst and hunger for the football.
"We clearly need to have a better efforts than we had last weekend. That's for sure."
