Sam Iles has capped off an outstanding season by taking home the 2010 Gold Coast SUNS’ Best and Fairest Player Award.

The announcement was made at a club function at SEA WORLD earlier today.

It was an extraordinarily consistent season for the former Collingwood and Box Hill midfielder, particularly later in the year where he was outright best afield on several occasions.

Iles, affectionately known around the club as ‘Turtle’, was a clear winner in the end.

Daniel Harris and David Swallow finished second and third in the count. Zac Smith, Brandon Matera and Danny Stanley also attracted plenty of votes.

In presenting Iles with the award, Senior Coach Guy McKenna said the club could have asked for more from the hard-working midfielder.

“As his nickname suggests he just steadily goes about his business. As the year went by he just got stronger, better, fitter and faster. He’s a very worthy winner.”

The Victor Sports Ironman Award for defensive workrate and team work went to gutsy midfield leader Daniel Harris ahead of Iles, Rex Liddy, Maverick Weller and Roland Ah Chee.

Courageous defender Michael Coad won the Rise Up Players’ Player Award ahead of David Swallow and Trent McKenzie. Coad, who announced he will shortly return to full training after suffering an awful injury against Northern Bullants earlier in the year, also won the Allied Pickford Coaches’ Award in front of Sam Iles, David Swallow, Dan Harris, Danny Stanley and Alik Magin.

The Community Award went to young local player Jesse Haberfield.

Rockhampton-raised ruckman Zac Smith won the Hostplus Most Professional Award and the Goal Kicking Award was shared by Charlie Dixon and Brandon Matera who kicked 22 goals apiece.
