Unchanged GCFC line up to take on Hawks
Gold Coast Football Club will take an unchanged squad into this weekend’s game against Box Hill Hawks at Fankhauser Reserve, Southport on Saturday at 2.00pm.
The squad will be looking to continue on where it left off last weekend against Frankston when an explosive second half effort saw it come from six points down at the main break to win by nearly ten goals.
Although Senior Coach Guy McKenna foreshadowed a stint in the midfield this week for Karmichael Hunt, the league convert will instead be given a second opportunity to build upon a promising first up effort at fullback.
The full team is:
B Josh TOY Karmichael HUNT Taylor HINE
HB Roland AH CHEE Michael GUGLIOTTA Matt SHAW
C Trent McKENZIE Marc LOCK(c) Joey DAYE
HF Luke RUSSELL Charlie DIXON Sam ILES
F Liam PATRICK Rory THOMPSON Alik MAGIN

GCFC Assistant Coach Shaun Hart said even though the coaching staff was pleased with last week’s 57 point win over Frankston, the squad will have to play with more discipline against the Hawthorn-aligned Box Hill Hawks.
“We’ll obviously expect some Hawks players in their line up so we’ll expect them to play how the Hawks play. They’ll use a zone, and look to switch the ball quickly across their defence. We’ll have to work hard not to turn the ball over like we did early against Frankston or else we’ll be giving them too many chances.”
Despite last week’s impressive final margin, GCFC’s first half was far from its sharpest effort of the year. Hart said voicing a few home truths during the half time interval seemed to hit the mark.
“We needed a bit of a reality check. All players have their different roles, and we felt a few players weren’t doing what they were meant to be doing to the detriment of the overall team effort. We asked for a bit more team footy and a bit more discipline defensively. We realised we weren’t getting enough from too many, and sometimes you’ve got to call it how it is.”
Thankfully for GCFC, whatever was said worked.
“In the last quarter we kicked eight goals, but we had less possessions than in the first quarter. At first our ball movement was a bit tentative, but when we took the game on after half time we were away. But in the second half we got some people running through the middle and presenting up forward, so it was pleasing in the end.”
Hart, whose is responsible for the team’s defence, said he was pleased with Karmichael Hunt’s first up effort down back.
“I thought he did really well, a good and disciplined effort really, so we thought we’d give him another go to work further on his body control and positioning and apply a few lessons learned.”
• GCFC’s best against Frankston were Taylor Hine and Josh Toy. Both are still at school. Hine is at All Saints College here on the Gold Coast. Toy, who attends Penley and Essendon Grammar in Melbourne, is playing a handful of games during his school holidays.
• Box Hill Hawks currently sits ninth on the VFL Ladder with four wins to its credit. The Hawks come to Southport on the back of a 39 point loss to Collingwood.
• With Hawthorn enjoying a better season on the injury front at AFL level, Box Hill Hawks will be well stocked with well-credentialed AFL-listed talent to complement a raft of ex-AFL players including former Saint and Tiger Justin Plapp, once Swan Luke Ablett and former St Kilda rookie Khan Haretuku.
