A week after being nominated for the NAB AFL Rising Star, Trent McKenzie has now received a nomination for the Round 18 Goal of the Year.
The youngster whose kicking brilliance has taken the AFL world by storm, kicked the long goal from well inside the centre square, after receive the ball from teammate Danny Stanly in Collingwood’s forward line before breaking the lines before launching the goal.
Gold Coast SUNS fans are encouraged to vote for McKenzie’s goal which, if successfully voted, Gold of the Week, will go into the running for the overall Goal of the Year.
McKenzie told goldcoastfc.com.au that he believed his round 18 goal, in which he covered 120 meters, was better than the goal he kicked against Adelaide in Round 8 that was also nominated for Goal of the Week.
“It was probably an all round better goal, the one against Adelaide came off the boot well and was a better kick, but it was from a standing start” he said.
“When I got the ball on the half-back line I just took off as I saw some space, there weren’t too many options on up forward so I just tried to go the distance.
“I was pretty lucky that it continued to bounce through.”
The Round Eighteen Panasonic AFL Goal of the Year nominations are as follows:
Travis Colyer (Essendon)
Trent McKenzie (Gold Coast SUNS)
Eddie Betts (Carlton)
