The celebrations are well and truly finished and the Gold Coast SUNS historic win over Carlton assigned to the history pages as Guy McKenna’s charges prepare for their final challenge of the year against the inform Adelaide Crows at AAMI stadium on Saturday.
“That’s what we have got to do as a coaching group is manage that, get them to focus on the one game left.”
Mathematically still a chance to claim top spot on the Premiership ladder, the Crows at home loom as a massive challenge for the battle weary SUNS, however Coach Guy McKenna is confident the boys have onelast hit out in them.
Adelaide, big task, big opportunity for us to go over there and it is a happy hunting ground for us, our first victory of course but I’m sure Adelaide aren’t going to be rolling over and laying down.
With six wins to their credit in two seasons, the SUNS coach admits every victory tastes good for the emerging Gold Coasters saying each challenge takes them a step closer to achieving their goals as a groupand achieving their potential.
"People say that was a great win, well I say all the wins are great at the moment and again that’s the journey that we are on, we have just got to continue to build confidence, our reputation and know that we belong in the AFL."
Despite a nasty dose of the flu forcing a host of players off the training field this week, McKenna says he will resist the urge to make changes, instead rewarding those involved in the Carlton contest with another opportunity to impress.
“Most of the second year players have really stepped up and carried the load”
With one eye already on next year, the coach gave significant hope to the chances of mature age rookie KyleHorsley being at the Club, and also made his feelings clear on emerging star Josh Caddy.
Josh Caddy, we would like him on our list as well but we don’t always get to make that call, so that’s something we need to work through, we understand his talent, we understand how good he would be in our group, and how good the group would be for Josh and we would love him to stay so yeah fingers crossed.
The Coach also suggesting that barring injury, competition for starting spots would be fierce in 2013.
“Next year I would expect, looking at the way we have performed, you would think there might be some competition for spots which is fantastic.”
