A young SUNS side got off to a bright start in today’s VFL hit out at Metricon Stadium with a five goal to none first quarter.
Malcolm Rosas Jnr who has played in the midfield throughout the first two practice matches of the year showed how he intended to go on bursting out of the first centre bounce and delivering inside 50.
His speed, skill and agility adding a different element to the midfield group, one for members to keep an eye on throughout the 2021 season.
Matt Conroy had a strong first half in the ruck against the experienced Archie Smith, including slotting a set shot on a tight angle from the pocket after he earnt a free kick for a ruck infringement.
The highlight of the first half for the SUNS saw a slick piece of ball movement down the wing, that included Aiden Fyfe, Jeremy Sharp, Josh Corbett, Brayden Fiorini combining before Hewago Oea collected the ball, running inside 50 and slotting it from 40 metres out.
Josh Corbett was a strong presence in the forward half with three goals in the first half, but came from the ground early in the third quarter, finishing the game on the sidelines with what appeared to be cork.
In exciting signs for the future, a stoppage just outside 50 at the start of the second half saw Conroy tap down to Sam Flanders who dished it off to Alex Davies on the run and whilst under pressure kicked a goal on the run.
A three goal to two second quarter helped the SUNS extend their lead heading into the final quarter of the game.
The Lions kicked five goals to one in the final quarter to keep the contest alive but an even performance across the ground in the first three quarters of the game saw the SUNS prevail in their second practice match by 16 points.
Promising signs from the likes of Malcolm Rosas Jnr, Hewago Oea, Jeremy Sharp and Matthew Conroy throughout the game.
Complimented by the experienced group of Nick Holman, Fiorini, Jack Hombsch, Sean Lemmens and Jordan Murdoch, who were all solid across the ground.
